Thursday was “Tree day” and the pupils in several classes were out and about for some lessons based on trees. Pupils in 3rd and 4th Classes enjoyed a Field-Trip to the Novartis Woodland area, accompanied by Mr. Curtin, Pat, Mary and Ms. Tuohy. They studied the Woodland Habitat, observing the many creatures living in and around the trees. They used umbrella canopies to locate the various minibeasts and some used pooters to observe the creatures more closely. Trees were identified by the pupils, by observing their leaf-shape and the outline of the trees. Several Native trees were seen by the pupils as they followed the various tracks in the grounds of Novartis. These included the Ash, the Oak, the Sycamore and the Horse-Chestnut. For most of the group the highlight of the field trip was the close-up view of the frog, which caused great excitement among the boys and girls. All the pupils gazed in complete silence at the frog who didn’t make any move for several minutes……obviously this frog proved himself better than any teacher, when it came to gaining the pupils’ full attention!!
