Congratulations to Jill Roberts, Fifth Class, who was a recent prize-winner in the Passage West Maritime Festival Art Competition. Jill was recently presented with a generous Book Token, by the Chairperson of the Maritime Festival, Angela Murphy.
Author, Jim Murphy, accompanied Angela on the day and he presented Shanbally school with his most recent publication, “Passage to Everest and Beyond”. This book tells the story of Passage West man, Richard Hingston, who served in the Indian army and who was involved in the Everest expedition of 1924. Jim’s first book, “Salt Water & Rust in their Blood” tells the proud story of the Lower Harbour area and its rich maritime heritage from generations of fishermen and seamen.
Jim has a passion for the lore of the sea and ships and, during his visit to Shanbally school, he encouraged the children to be aware of our maritime heritage and the generations of fishermen and seamen that came from this Lower Harbour area.
Pictured, below, is Jill receiving her prize from Festival Chairperson, Angela Murphy. Seated on the right of the photo are the two authors, Jim Murphy from Passage West and well-known author, Alice Taylor who was visiting the school on the same day, to talk to the pupils about her many books and to share some stories of school-days in the past, as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations.
Well done, Jill! We are very proud of you!
