Update No. 7   24/10/13

Dear Parents,

  • Halloween Break

A reminder that we close at our regular times of 1.30pm and 2.30pm respectively. It’s hard to believe that Halloween is already upon us. On behalf of everyone in Shanbally NS I wish you all a happy, safe and enjoyable break. We return to school on Monday November 4th.

  • PA Cake Sale

Our Halloween Cake Sale takes place tomorrow in the Halla. The children are dressing up tomorrow and we’re looking forward to seeing their costumes. Please, no scary masks. The PA welcomes any baking offerings and will accept them in the Halla before 9am, if possible.

  • Lenrec Recycling

A final reminder that Lenrec Recycling will be collecting old clothing, books, phones etc. tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who has left a sizeable amount already. Any bags can be brought to Halla or Yard Shelter in the morning.

  • Charity Fundraising
  • Maritime College

Sincere thanks to all in our school community for the fantastic support we received following our Walk on Saturday 12th, in aid of CUH Children’s Unit. At present we have collected a whopping total of€2,813. I would ask everyone to return any outstanding cards by tomorrow morning please. It would be magical if we broke the €3,000 mark. After mid-term, Máire Watson (CUH) will call in to thank us personally and to collect the cheque. Well done everyone.

We were privileged to attend the National Maritime College of Ireland in Ringaskiddy on their Open Day on Tuesday last. We are sincerely grateful to Peter Walter and Noreen for a unique opportunity to see the impressive facilities in the college first-hand.

Although this trip was planned over a month ago, due to inclement weather, the significant difficulties/costs of hiring a bus etc. we had decided not to attend. However on Tuesday morning, the weather cleared and I took the decision to walk 3rd to 6th classes down. As usual, the staff was superb in making this happen safely and efficiently. Our plan was to notify parents through text to collect at the Maritime College. Unfortunately our server crashed so we were unable to text parents until late in the afternoon.

————————————————————————————————————————–

I wish to apologise to all for the pressure that this situation brought about. Despite the difficulties I am confident that the students enjoyed the experience, especially the nautical simulators. The Maritime College were so impressed by the student’s interest that we have been invited down again at a later date to view everything at a more leisurely pace. Apologies again and thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

If you would like to revise your Text Alerts from the school, please complete the Request Slip at the end of this update. You might like to put your regular child-minder/ collector on our text alerts. Also, we are compiling e-mail addresses for more economical communication with parents e.g. this newsletter! Please list one main email for this purpose.

  • Juliet Murphy – Cork Ladies Football

Juliet’s visit on Wednesday 16th was a huge success. She was genuinely taken back by the warmth of the welcome and the splendid splash of colour. We are most grateful to Juliet for sharing some advice and words of wisdom to all, especially our school team who are preparing for their final. I wish to thank the PA for the voucher presented to Juliet to mark her visit.

Sciath an Scol have been in contact and the revised  date for our Sciath na Scol final v Cloyne is Tuesday November 12th at 12noon approx. More details to follow.

  • Shamrocks GAA

We were delighted to welcome Shamrocks u12 boys football team yesterday following their recent County Final League success. Both present and past pupils on the team visited classes with their Shield. This win reflects the great strides that Shamrocks GAA underage are making, especially the Academy which is still open to new or lapsed members for 2013/2014.
