Enrolment Policy

Enrolment Policy – Shanbally N.S.
This Policy was devised in consultation with the Board Of Management, Parents Association and Staff of Shanbally N.S.

The following list of Criteria will be used to determine enrolment in Scoil Náisiúnta Seanbhaile:

  • Brothers and sisters of existing pupils
  • Children whose permanent residence is in the School Catchment Area: Coolmore, Raheens, Shanbally Upper, Lower and Middle, Raffeen.
  • Children of Past Pupils.
  • Date of original Applications determines priority of those from outside the Immediate Catchment Area.
  • The maximum number in class rule, according to Department of Education and Science Applies.

Enrolments for any children, other than brothers and sisters as in (i), above, will not be accepted until after the child’s 2 birthday.
It is the B.O.M. policy that enrolled children must be at least 4 years and 3 months on September 1 of enrolling year.

Enrolment of Pupils across the classes:

The enrolment of children into any other class other than Junior Infants is subject to the following criteria:

The D.E.S guideline regarding pupil/teacher ratio at the time of enrolment must be adhered to.
A written report from the previous school must be received prior to an enrolment decision.
Should extra resources be required for a new applicant over and above existing resources, the B.O.M will, prior to approval of Application, request the D.E.S to provide such necessary resources. The success of the application will be subject to the provision of these resources by the D.E.S.

Enrolment of Children with Special Needs

In relation to applications for the enrolment of children with special needs the Board of Management will request a copy of the child’s medical and/or psychological report or where such a report is not available, will request that the child be assessed immediately. The purpose of the assessment report is to assist the school in establishing the educational and training needs of the child relevant to his/her disability or special needs and to profile the support services required.

Following receipt of the report, the Board will assess how the school can meet the needs specified in the report. Where the Board deems that further resources are required, it will, prior to enrolment, request the Department of Education and Science to provide the resources required to meet the needs of the child as outlined in the psychological and/or medical report. These resources may include for example, access to or the provision of any or a combination of the following: visiting teacher service, resource teacher for special needs, special needs assistant, specialised equipment or furniture, transport services or other.

The school will meet with the parents of the child to discuss the child’s needs and the school’s suitability or capability in meeting those needs. Where necessary, a full case conference involving all parities will be held, which may include parents, principal, class teacher, learning support teacher, special class teacher, resource teacher for special needs or psychologist, as appropriate.
It may be necessary for the Board Of Management to defer enrolment of a particular child pending:

The receipt of an assessment report: and/or
The provision of appropriate resources by the Department of Education and Science to meet the needs specified in the psychological and/or medical report.

An enrolment Application Form must be completed. On a request for Enrolment, the Parents/Guardian will receive (a) An enrolment Application Form together with (b) a copy of the school’s Enrolment policy. An offer or refusal of a place will be formally given in Jan/Feb of the enrolling year. Parents will be required to give a written acceptance of an offer. Refusal of an offer to enrol can be appealed under section 29 of the Appeals Procedure of the Education Act (1998) within 24 calendar days from the date of notification from the Board. The Principal represents the Board Of Management on all matters dealing with enrolments. A parent information meeting is scheduled in the month of May for the parents of the children who have been offered a place.

New entrants usually attend for two mornings before the summer holidays. Acceptance of an offer of a place in Scoil Náisiúnta Seanbhaile also means an acceptance of the school’s Code of Behaviour and Discipline and School Rules, copies of which, will be issued to all Parents/Guardians. The School Plan which encompasses Curriculum Polices and Organisational Policies will also be available for perusal by Parents if they so wish. A Parents Information Booklet is issued to each Parent/Guardian.
