So what exactly does the Parents Association do and where does all the money go?

My family are new to Shanbally National school so in September I decided I should pop into the Parents Association meeting and see if I could learn a bit more about this school and lend a hand if needed.

Let me begin by saying the parents association are a very passionate group of individuals.  They give up their spare time to ensure that their children and your children have great opportunities during their time in this school.  I could not believe the passion that comes from these individuals.  Many evenings are spent brain storming to come up with novel fund raising ideas to raise funds for things that will benefit the children.

So far this year some of the things we have paid for include skipping ropes for the school and the balance for the bus trip to Mayfield for the Sciath na Scol final.  The €5 that was requested from each child towards the transport and entrance to the game simply wasn’t enough to cover the cost of the bus.  Before I joined the parents association I would never have known that the bus could cost €750.00 to drop the kids to the match.  It’s when you hear things like this you realise how, without the fundraising from the Parents Association outings like this for the children would not be feasible.

I cannot stress enough the dedication that these parents have for this school and its pupils.  Rain hail or shine they are working away behind the scenes. As I sit here typing this I am aware that back at the school there are a number of the Parents Association out in the lashing rain loading the clothes collection bags onto the truck to raise more funds.

The Halloween cake sale was a great success we raised €721 and the children absolutely loved it.  It was my first time at the Shanbally cake sale and when I saw the beaming faces on the kids I realised exactly why these ladies work so hard to raise funds for these wonderful children.  The cake sale was full so of happiness and innocence you couldn’t help but be uplifted by the kids excitement.

This year after lots of deliberation (and I mean lots & lots of back and forth & multiple WhatsApp conversations) it was decided that the Christmas bazaar would not go ahead.  Instead Shanbally, for the first time ever will host a cinema night “powered by pedal power”.  This I’m sure will entertain both the kids and parents alike, and once again I think we should spare a thought and give thanks to the Parents Association for all the work that is going into planning this event.

You might wonder what all the money that’s raised is used for, well each year the school comes up with wish list that would benefit the kids e.g. this year we hope to purchase new maths kits, trundle wheels, money kits etc., Standardised Testing Manuals and Irish reading books for the library.

I guess my reason for including this information in the newsletter is to make you all aware of the fabulous parents association that we have behind us here in Shanbally and I wanted you all to know how well they are taking care of your children’s interests.  It’s very easy to forget that so much work goes into raising money, coming up with new ideas, sourcing spot prizes, setting up, manning and cleaning up after events.   Your continued support for the various fund raising events is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Your Parents Association

May 2016: Newsletter

SHANBALLY NATIONAL SCHOOL PARENTS ASSOCIATION

Just some quick updates and information on on-going projects

MONEY SNAKE COMPETITION

Thank you to all the students who took the time and trouble in sending in entries into our “Design A Money Snake” Competition, the quality and imagination shown on our theme “Healthy Eating” was fantastic, well done to you all. We are delighted to announce the winner of the competition and the lucky recipient of the €30 CEX voucher was Nicola Leppert (3rd Class) and the runner up €10 National Reading Voucher was won Ciara O’ Flynn (6th Class). You will be able to see this fantastic design on Friday 10th June (weather permitting). When we undertake copying this design onto the playground so the children can each enjoy placing their saved coins onto the design (we hope you’re all busy saving coins in your pringles tins!!) pictures of the finished picture complete with coins will be uploaded onto both our Facebook page and the school website.

SCHOOL VEGETABLE PROJECT

We are very excited to announce a new project for all of the school!!, by kind permission of David Nolan, The Board of Management and the staff we are starting an exciting new initiative whereby all students will be given the opportunity to “grow their own” vegetables and plants, I’m sure you’ll agree this is a fantastic opportunity for our children to appreciate exactly just where their food comes from.

We have been donated pallets and old tyres but are still looking for old wheelbarrows, pots, old wellies and other suitable containers for this project, so we are asking when you clear out your sheds you could bear us in mind for any unwanted gardening equipment or pots.

Also any seed packets, bulbs, compost etc. would be greatly appreciated.

But what we really need is “GREEN FINGERED HELP”

This is a new project and our small PA committee do not claim to be very “green Fingered” so anyone willing to give up a couple of hours to help with this project, even just to initially get it up and running would be appreciated (grandparents, Uncles and Aunts this include you!!), we hope once this is set up the children will take over the daily tending, if you can help (no matter how small!!) please contact either the school directly or one of the committee members or message us through our Facebook page. Thank You!!

CLOTHES RECYCLING

The next opportunity to recycle clothes collection before the end of the school year is Tuesday 7th June , this has proved a great way to raise badly need funds for the school whilst also de cluttering your wardrobes and helping a good cause! Win, win win!!! So please could you bear us in mind for any clothes you are looking to recycle.

BATTERY RECYCLING

There will be battery recycle containers located in the school reception, filled containers will be donated to the Laura Lynn charity, I’m sure you’ll agree an excellent cause.  Our donations would go some way to hit their target fund of €250,000 for 2016.

MOBILE PHONE COLLECTION

Adding to our growing number of recycling projects is our mobile phone collection.  We ask that you might donate your unwanted phones for recycling.  Please ensure that all personal material is removed including SIM cards.  A recycling bin is located just outside Ruth’s office.

CONFIRMATION & COMMUNION

We would like to congratulate all the girls and boys that recently made their Confirmation and Holy Communion.  We would also like to thank all the volunteers for their contribution to help make both days very special for the children and their families.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION

We are a committee of 8 parents, we are small but mighty!!! The role of the parents association is to help fundraise on behalf of the school for items that enhance and enrich the learning environment for all children.  We do this by holding cake sales, clothing collections, money snakes, raffles & Christmas bazaar.  We generally meet at the front gate of the school for a natter in the mornings and we are always looking for new parents to join us.  We have occasional meetings and would be delighted if you would consider joining the committee for the coming year starting in September.

Here is how the Parents Association have helped for 2015-2016 so far…

  • 9 Lottie Dolls and accessories for Junior & Senior Infants Aistear programme
  • Selection box and a visit from Santa for all children
  • Garden supplies for participating classes
  • Church flowers for holy Communion and Confirmation
  • Disco & D.J for 6th class Confirmation party
  • Communion morning ‘party’
  • 6th Leaving day
  • Internet Safety Competition
  • Open Night refreshments

Best of luck to all our community as we head in to the summer holidays!

February 2016: Newsletter

February Cake Sale

As is tradition we are planning a Valentines Cake Sale. It’s a little early this year, due to Lent as we thought it best to have it a little earlier so everyone can enjoy the fun!! Sorry for the short notice but we would like to go for this Friday 05th. Please bring all cakes/cookies to the Halla on Friday morning. The cakes will be the normal price of 50c each (larger cakes priced individually). We ask you to please send an extra lunchbox or Tupperware container in with your child for their cakes.

National Council of the Blind Ireland – Bagathon

Due to the huge success of the clothes recycling last year we have arranged a second collection on Tuesday 08th March, please bring any unwanted clothes, shoes(pairs please), handbags, belts etc. to the Halla and we’ll start the collection now. These will be recycled by the NCBI through their network of stores, thus avoiding landfill.  In acknowledgement of this, the NCBI will issue the school with a certificate of thanks noting the number of bags received.  Accreditation will also be given towards the Green Flag award.  We were delighted with the support for this event last year with a donation of 50 bags let’s try to break this record by spring-cleaning our wardrobes!!.

Mobile Phone and Electronics Recycling

We are on a roll with recycling and are asking that you dig in those kitchen drawers and cupboards for unwanted mobile phones or electronics, we are placing a container in the Halla for any electronic devices and they will be recycled through “Green Your Goods “which is not only good for the planet but will also generate revenue for the school. (See their website www.gyg.ie for more information on what electronics they will accept).

Money Snake

With the proposed removal of 1 and 2 cent coins imminent we thought this a good time to do another fun money snake (design to be confirmed). We hope you have been filling those Pringles containers with small change as we are hoping to do the money snake in the near future and will be running a class competition for the snake design.

Pub Quiz

Back by popular demand is the now infamous Shanbally National School PA “Pub Quiz” we are planning this for Friday March 05th (to be confirmed) in the Shamrock Bar, Shanbally, and would urge all parents to get a team together. It’s great fun and you seriously don’t have to be a genius to enter (more general knowledge questions then academic ones!!).  More details will follow but start getting your team together, teams of 4 @€10 per person with fun prizes and a raffle on the night.

50th Anniversary Posters (Last few remaining!!)

A Limited number of 50th Anniversary Posters are available, with every child present in the school at the time featuring on the poster together with their teachers. Available at a reduced price of €2. (See Ruth in the office or a member of the PA)

Special Note

We’d like to congratulate Gemma Kavanagh (Mum of Ellen 5th Class and Stephen 2nd Class) on her recent weightlifting win, which also resulted in a world record for power lifting 105KG (go the Mums!!)

December 2015

Annual Christmas Bazaar

The Bazaar was held at Raffeen Creek Sports Club on Sunday 29thNovember.  It is always the highlight of the school social calendar and this year was no exception.  The addition of Christmas craft exhibition was a great success with over 140 entries between the 4 categories.  It was wonderful to see such creativity and imagination. The children’s school crafts were also exemplary.  Thank you to the parent helpers and their family for setting up and tidying up over the course of the weekend; we couldn’t have done it without you!.  The committee of Raffeen Sports Club donated use of the hall free of charge and we are extremely grateful for this.  Thank you to Mrs. Barry, Fr Sean & Mrs Howard for judging the Christmas Craft competition.  We are delighted to announce that the Bazaar generated €3000 to fund new iPads.  We appreciate your continued support.

National Council of the Blind Ireland – Bagathon

The school collected 80 bags of clothes all of which will be recycled by the NCBI through their network of stores, thus avoiding landfill.  In acknowledgement of this the NCBI will issue the school with a certificate of thanks noting the number of bags received.  Accreditation will also be given towards the Green Flag award.  We are delighted with the support for this event and special thanks to Deirdre & Jason Orchard for their donation of 50 bags.  This event raised €480 to go towards funding new school iPads.

Santa visit to Shanbally NS

Santa will arrive to Shanbally NS on Monday 21st December.  He is very excited to meet and greet all the children and will have an early Christmas gift for all his Shanbally pals.

Christmas Raffle

The Parents Association will host their annual Christmas raffle, this year with a twist.  TICKETS are FREE to all school children, with a fabulous chocolate hamper for the winner and runners up prizes of smaller chocolate treats!!  The draw will be held on Monday 21st December with the winning tickets drawn by none other than Santa himself.

Reindeer Food

Reindeer will be especially hungry when Christmas Eve arrives, stock up on some Reindeer friendly food. 100% approved by Rudolph!!!.  Available at school for €1.

50th Anniversary Posters

A Limited number of 50th Anniversary Posters are available, with every child present in the school at the time featuring on the poster together with their teachers.  A great gift for relatives this Christmas.  Available for just €3. (see Ruth in the office or a member of the PA)

2016 Projects

We are looking at some new events for 2016 as part of our fundraising calendar (Old mobile phone collection & a people powered cinema night to name just a couple)!! We will look at doing our money snake again as it was a great day at school.  We collected over €900 that day but the girls and boys had great fun designing the school crest in coins. Could we ask that you keep your unwanted change especially the soon to be redundant 1 & 2cent coins in pringles tubs as we are going to come up with an even more spectacular design for 2016?

The Parents Association would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family

a very Merry Christmas & Peaceful New Year.

WELCOME TO OUR OCTOBER  2015 P.A.  NEWSLETTER…

After our last PA meeting we have the following to report:-

Item 1                   THE HALLOWEEN CAKE SALE

As is tradition we are holding our first cake sale of the new school year to celebrate Halloween and are asking our wonderful Mums/Dads/Grandparents & Guardians to bake up a ‘spooky’ storm in the kitchen!! This will be held on Friday 23rd October in the Halla and all pupils will be able to dress up in fancy dress costume to add to the fun. (Please bring your cakes, cookies etc to the Halla on the Friday morning, thank you). Cakes cost 50c each.

Item 2                  BINGO NIGHT AT THE FERRYBOAT INN RINGASKIDDY

Instead of our traditional Quiz night we are holding a Bingo night at the Ferryboat Inn, Ringaskiddy on Friday 6th November. There will be great prizes and mighty fun and we would love you all to attend to this great social evening.

Item 3                  TEXTILE RECYCLING

We are organising a recycling company to call to the school. They will collect and pay for our old recyclables, such as clothing, bedding, handbags, soft toys etc. So if you’re planning a ‘clearout’ please bear this in mind as it’s a great way of raising funds for the school and making space in your wardrobes!! An added bonus is 10% is donated to the Laura Lynn foundation…. a win win for all!!! The proposed date for this is November 24th (to be confirmed)

Item 4                                     CHRISTMAS PANTO

The Parents Association normally organise a Panto to visit the school at Christmas time, but on speaking with both the teachers and pupils it has been agreed that this is something they no longer want, so we are looking into something totally different this Christmas… more information to follow shortly.

Item 5                   THE CHRISTMAS BAZAAR

The proposed date for Christmas Bazaar is 29th November (to be confirmed) and this year’s Bazaar will have quite a few new twists!! We are hoping to erect a separate marquee which will house exhibits from the children for a whole new section of competitions, to include lego building models, baking, pictures, vegetable animals and much more, children will be encouraged to enter these competitions and they will be judged before the Bazzar opens with rosettes and prizes being awarded by guest judges. We have other activities planned and will be sending out a separate newsletter on this!!!.

Item 6                         PARENTS ASSOCIATION COUNCIL OF IRELAND

Just to remind all parents especially our new Junior Infant parents that we are now members of the Parents Association Council of Ireland which gives us as parents many benefits, with lots of free talks, free useful leaflets and advice on their confidential helpline and numerous books on helpful topics to purchase. We would urge you to visit the website and am sure you will find it extremely helpful. www.npc.ie

Item 7                         PLAYGROUND ACTIVITIES

Due to your fantastic efforts we have raised the money needed to re vamp the playgrounds. We are currently waiting for repairs to be done to areas of the concrete so can’t start the painting just yet, and we are in talks with the teachers and pupils to see exactly what they would like to have in terms of new activities and toys … watch this space as this will be underway very shortly.

Thank you…..

We had a fantastic response to our ‘call to arms’ for help needed on the Parents Association at our various fundraisers. Thank you to all who expressed an interest in helping out and we will be in touch shortly giving dates and venues which you may be able to help with.

And Finally

Most importantly all our fundraising has an aim. This year’s aim is to buy 16 ipads for the school so that each child will have the opportunity to use an iPad on their own instead of having to share with others. We hope you will agree this is a very worthy idea and one which should benefit all of our children. Please support all our events.

Aistear programme

Junior and Senior Infants are introducing the Aistear programme which involves learning through play. The classroom will be organised into 5 areas for Aistear time: drama, construction, small world, art and quiet Areas. Each area has an activity allowing the children to learn through play and the children will move round the 5 areas through the week. This style of learning needs a wide range of resources in order to give the children the widest possible experiences.

We are trying to avoid large expenditure for the school and whilst also trying to recycle we are hoping you may have some of the items needed and be happy to donate them to the school for this excellent new initiative.

September 2015

Welcome back and welcome to our very first newsletter this year from the Parents Association.

On Tuesday 8th September the Parents Association had their AGM and this is a summary of the year. First we want to thank all the parents for the support they gave the parents association last year by attending events, baking cakes and buying raffle tickets. Without your help our year wouldn’t have been so successful. We would also like to thank Novartis and the Shanbally Deli for their donations.

The fundraisers we organised were :-

   *Cake sales

  *   Money trail

*Christmas Bazaar

 * Christmas, Easter and end of term raffles

*Table quiz

The money these events raised paid for :-

Contribution to the panto

Christmas celebrations (including selection boxes)

The communion reception

6th class leaving day and leaving night

Prizes for the internet safety competition and science week.

We bought our own cups and saucers to use at school functions (instead of hiring). We also gave funds to the school to aid in purchasing and maintaining school equipment.

We have over €1000 to spend on painting the playground and new playground activities for all years to enjoy.

We tried to have a mix of events to raise money and fun things for the children. Some of these things like the cake sales and the money trail managed to do both.

All of these things were achieved by a very small hardworking committee. This year we would like for the committee to become bigger and better!! We need more ideas for fundraising (and how best to spend the money raised to benefit all) and people to help at events to help share the workload. To do this we need 2 parents/guardians from each class to come onto the committee so each year group is represented. Please consider coming onto the committee for just a year to help, you wouldn’t need to attend all meetings or all events; just a little help and input would make all the difference.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 23rd September at  7.30.

****** TIME TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK FOR ALL YOUR GENEROSITY ********

We have contacted the Everyman Theatre in an attempt to offer all Shanbally NS families a substantial discount on Panto tickets, this year they are performing Cinderella from 06th Dec to 11th Jan and the good news is they would be happy to offer us at least €6 (possibly more depending on numbers) reduction on full priced tickets. They would issue a voucher which you would be able to use to book your tickets on your preferred date and time,(no we don’t all have to go together!!)

We are trying to ascertain what kind of numbers would be interested in taking up this offer so we can negotiate a great deal!!. If this is something you would be interested in please could you indicate on the tear off slip below and we will contact you directly should there be sufficient numbers to go ahead.

We are hoping to contact other organisations/venues and use our numbers to negotiate better deals for Shanbally NS families, if there is a particular attraction or venue (such as Fota wildlife) you think we should approach please let us know.

SHANBALLY NATIONAL SCHOOL PARENTS ASSOCIATION

22nd October 2014:  Newsletter no. 1

Re: Shanbally National School Parents Association 1st Newsletter.

Outlining all the Parents Association upcoming events from October to December 14′.

Dear Parents,

Welcome back and welcome to our very first newsletter this year from the Shanbally National School Parents Association J

We would like to begin by thanking those wonderful members of the Parents Association who have unfortunately stepped down this year we sincerely thank them for all their tireless work over the years.

Next we would like to welcome our new members together with some much valued existing members of the Parents Association:

Tracy Crotty,- Chairperson         Jackie Keane – Vice Chairperson

Cathy Davis – Treasurer Marie-Anne Cotter – PR

Alison Donegana & Audra Busteed – Joint Secretaries

Elaine O’Flynn, Trish Coleman, Andrea Doolan

The committee is still pretty thin so if you have some time, enthusiasm or just great ideas we are open and hiring !!!

As you all know The Parents Association plays a key role within the school. We are currently busily preparing for our upcoming events for another fun-filled fundraising year. The money raised each year goes directly back into the school and more importantly benefits each and every one of our children.

Once again we will require Spot Prizes for our upcoming events, which include The School Bazaar and our Table Quiz Night held in November. The PA has started the gruelling task of calling to businesses in the locality and wider community looking for spot prizes. If you have any unused presents or toys you may not want/need, boxes of chocolates, wine or anything else you think would be of use to us we would really appreciate them. Also if you have any affiliation with a business or know someone who could help us please try these avenues. A hamper, a voucher or donation would be fantastic!

We are very excited to share the following list of upcoming events with you all. These events are scheduled to take place from now until December, (some dates are still to be confirmed);
