Newsletter October 25th 2011
Dear Parents,
Hereunder are a few dates/notes for your information. Please read with care!
Mid-term break
Monday 31 to Friday 4 November. School closes early: 12.30 for Junior and Senior Infants and 12.45 for older class as per tradition. Children (and staff) are asked to dress up for Halloween and bring in €2 for Board Game Day which this year is in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital and our Literacy Lift Off Programme.
This year’s Terry Fox Run/Walk for Cancer Research takes place on Saturday 12 November at 2pm from the school car-park. Sponsorship Cards will issue on Monday 7 on our return to school. The reason it’s late this year is because of the scheduled Shamrocks GAA Fundraising Run/Walk next Saturday 29 October. By the way this is an important fundraiser for the Club as they improve their facilities which benefit the community and the children in the school who play GAA- I have spare sponsorship cards if you feel like joining in!!
Annual School Book Fair Week: The Book Fair arrives at school on Tuesday 22nd November for one week. Children and parents enjoy this event each year and we are looking forward to it. Children from 1st to 6th are currently enjoying their Puffin Book Club books.
The Literacy Lift Off Programme with Senior Infants and 1 Class is in full swing. The promotion of reading and supporting its early development is one of the key target areas in Shanbally National School.
The sound of music and singing rings joyfully through the classes each Tuesday and Wednesday , as Louise O’Sullivan puts the classes through their paces in preparation for our upcoming Christmas Shows which are due to be held in the Community Centre, Ringaskiddy
Here are the dates for your diary.
Wednesday 14 December - Matinee at 12 noon
- Evening Show at 7pm
Thursday 15 December - Evening Show at 7pm
The Nativity Play and Carol Service will take place on Tuesday 20th December at 7pm in Shanbally Church.
The School Parents Association: Some events are coming up shortly such as the Table Quiz on Friday November 11th and the Bazaar on November 27th. I know the Parents Association are looking for businesses to take space on their Calendar so please contact one of the PA if you wish to avail of it. Also spot prizes are sought for the Quiz Night and the Bazaar. These can be dropped into the school office.
Parents Contributions- to date we have received contributions from 78 families in the school. We very much appreciate any support you can give in these straitened economic times.
Enrolments 2012: We will be actively looking at this after the mid-term. Please ensure you have younger children enrolled.
This year as in previous years we will participate in Christmas Shoe Boxes for those in Europe less fortunate than ourselves. These will be collected the week after mid-term i.e. week of 7November. A small number of additional envelopes are available in the office.
Formation of our new Board of Management: As you now know the term of our current BoM is coming to an end on November 30 and the new Board takes up office on December 1st. The Board comprises of 2 Parent Nominees (being elected this Thursday 27th in the school at 8pm!), 2 nominees of the Patron (the Catholic Bishop of Cork and Ross), 1 staff nominee, the Principal and 2 from the wider community (not current parent of children in the school) which number 8 in total. If you have any suggestions for the last 2 please suggest them to me. Please come along on Thursday night if you wish to take part in the election of the Parent Nominees, it should take no longer than 30 mins.
New Principal: I’m afraid there’s no “winding down” process for me, as we are so busy. Still, the advertisement on educationposts.ie has been posted, applications will follow and the shortlisting / interviewing process will take place in November. I am enjoying these days nevertheless and many thanks for all your good wishes etc. as we move along towards Christmas.
That’s all for now,
Go raibh maith agaibh.
Liam Shanahan
Principal
