About Our School

Mission Statement

It is the Mission of Shanbally National School, in its role of providing education for primary school children:

" To enable children to live full lives as children

" To equip them to avail of further education

" To prepare them to live full and useful lives as adults in society

Aims

The school, through the teaching staff, with the support of the Board of Management, the parents of the children and the community in general, will work towards fulfilling this Mission Statement, through implementing the Curriculum as recommended by the Department of Education and will have at its core these specific aims:

" To help children to think clearly, creatively and critically and to act independently.

" To help in fostering the desire to learn, encourage children to a sense of self esteem and cultivate in them the motivation to apply themselves to worthwhile and satisfying activities.

" To help children to develop their creative and imaginative capacities, though both expressive and appreciative activities.

" To help children to understand the society and environment in which they live, the interdependence of people and nations and to foster a spirit of co-operation and the capacity and willingness to contribute in a critical but positive manner towards the development of society.

" To help children to respect, appreciate and understand their own and other cultural identities.

" To help children acquire and develop moral and religious values and a respect for the beliefs and values held by others

" To help children to prepare for the social, domestic, recreational and working aspects of their adult lives

The school, in the context of this Mission Statement, will take into consideration:

(a) The stage of development of children

(b) The differences between children due to variations in intellectual and physical ability,
personality, background, etc.

The school recognises that all areas of human development (intellectual, spiritual, physical, social, emotional) are inextricably linked and the application of its Educational /Organisational policies reflect and develop this link.
The school curriculum is learner-centred. It emphasises the importance of Literacy, Numeracy, and Language, while at the same time responding to changing needs in Science and Technology, Social, Personal and Health Education, and Citizenship.

School Ethos
The school, both traditionally and currently has a Catholic ethos. The school staff voluntarily teaches the Catholic Religious Programme for Primary Schools and the children receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Communion and Confirmation during their primary school years. The Christian values of Love, Peace, Justice and Forgiveness permeate the school's spiritual philosophy. Children from a non-catholic background are not discriminated against in enrolment or participation in the school and all parents wishes are respected in the area of Religious Education.
