Welcome Back Sept 2020

It was fantastic to welcome our wonderful pupils back to school this week. It was great to reconnect with everyone. Special welcome to our new Junior Infants- we look forward to getting to know you all over the next few years. It was lovely to hear the sound of children playing in the yards and seeing everyone catching up with their friends. We wish you all a happy and healthy school year.

Dear parents and all Shanbally NS Community,

I write to you with regard to some important news. I am sorry to relay that DP Claire O’Connell will be leaving us at Christmas. Claire has been appointed the Principal of Scoil Bhríde , Crossmahon NS near Bandon. While I am saddened at the loss for us in Shanbally NS, I have no doubt that Claire will be a wonderful Principal and make a huge contribution there for many years to come.

Claire joined the staff of Shanbally NS in September 2011, having taught previously for 6 years in Navan. Over the years she taught across all the classes and in recent years was a valued member of our SET team. She was of course appointed Deputy Principal in November 2015 and was a huge support in the administration and management aspect of school life.

Claire was a conscientious,  dedicated team member who contributed hugely also though her music, both in class and on many special occasions (e.g.) Christmas Nativity, First Holy Communion, Confirmation and associated ceremonies, 6th Class Leaving Nights etc. not to mention some life-long memorable trips to Hallelujah and Peace Proms Concerts. She was a huge asset to the school and will be sorely missed.

Claire’s SET place will be filled from January 6th to June 2020 by Kate O’Sullivan (Bachelor of Ed. Mary I). Kate has previously taught in Shanbally NS and returns to us having taught mainstream classes in St. Johns Girls School in Carrigaline and in Ballinspittle NS September 17 to June 18. Kate has also extensive SET experience in Ballinspittle NS 2018/2019 and has indeed recently commenced a Master’s in Education. Kate is currently teaching our Junior Infants class until Christmas while Ms. Niamh Coffey recovers from her recent accident.  There will be a comprehensive handover process between Ms. O’Connell and Ms. O’Sullivan to ensure a smooth transition. We will introduce Ms. O’Sullivan properly to all children in her care prior to Christmas.

We wish them all the best in their future careers and say a huge, sincere thank you to Claire for her significant contribution to Shanbally NS over the years.

Christmas Notes

Dear parents, a reminder of our Cork Simon Fundraiser (see attached Santa Stamp Envelopes). For 1 euro these stamps are available from class teachers (up to 3rd class) or from the office. It is a nice way to support this local charity for very little. Thank you to those who have purchased the envelopes to date. We hope to send off monies collected in December, in time for Christmas.

  • Cork Penny Dinner Christmas Appeal Reminder

Ms. Cunningham is collecting items for the homeless of Cork which she shall donate to Penny Dinners in Cork city. Penny Dinners work directly with the homeless people of Cork. The items that are needed/ requested for adults and children are:

  •    New and store packaged underwear, vests, tights, socks
  •    Children’s jackets
  •    Baby Wipes

Items are being collected throughout November and delivered them to Penny Dinners next week. This is a way of helping the homeless in Cork city. All donations gratefully received. A box clearly marked has been put at the back of the Halla for anyone who would like to donate the listed items.

  • You might be aware of the new bus service which passes Shanbally NS and includes Carrigaline. It passes close to the secondary schools in Carrigaline which might interest parents.
