2. KIDS INC

The Kids Inc Christmas Holiday Camp is taking place January 2nd to 4th from 8.30am-6.30pm. This camp is open to all children in Shanbally NS, not just those who have engaged with them so far. Bookings will close on Wednesday December 12th. For more information or to book a place please contact Niamh Kinsella at 083-8785048 or emailNiamh@kidsinc.ie. It is proposed that similar camps will be run during our February midterm which commences on Monday February 18th to Friday February 22nd and also during the Easter Holidays, Monday 15th April until Friday April 26th.

3. NATIVITY “A King is Born”

The school Nativity “A King is Born” will take place in the Church on Thursday December 13th at 6.30 pm. The children are working very hard on their performances. We request that all children are in place at 6.15 pm. There is no allocated seating for the audience. Please be mindful that the Church floor has been replaced recently. Therefore we have been asked to ensure that there is no food, drink or chewing gum brought into the Church. Please ensure that the children have used the toilet before leaving home. Children will be dismissed in an organised manner, class by class, at the end of the performance. We look forward to seeing you on the night for what should be an enjoyable and memorable occasion.

4. Car Parking:
Sincere thank you to all for the much improved car-parking this term. I would particularly like to thank the staff and parents who ensured the safety of our children and the smooth daily transitions while the village centre experienced extensive work improvements on the roundabout. Shanbally Shop and Deli have also expressed their sincere appreciation of same as it has had a direct positive impact on their business. As ever our main priority needs to be the safety of our children and all in the school community so I would urge you to continue to park up the road towards Shamrock’s GAA in 2019. I would like to thank our parents who assisted in the campaign, which has been ongoing since 2007, to improve/provide footpaths to our school.

5. Collection for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind

Last month we invited firefighter Alex O’Shea to visit the school. Alex has successfully completed 32 marathons in 16 days, taking in every County in Ireland. He recently donated approximately €30,000 to the Irish Guide Dogs and his fundraising measures remain ongoing. During his visit, he outlined to us the time and cost involved in training these guide dogs. We would like to help him in this worthwhile endeavor. This initiative also ties in with our “December Kindness month”. We request that families donate any spare change for this cause to the class teacher by Friday December 14th and we will present a cheque to the Irish Guide Dogs on Thursday December 20th.

6. Amber Flag Initiative

To help us further develop an inclusive, healthy school environment, we are engaged in an application process to apply for an Amber Flag by April 1st 2019. To achieve this goal, we have established an Amber Flag team consisting of 7 6th class students and 4 staff members. This team meet weekly to plan and execute tasks which promote emotional well-being. An example is that our theme for December is “Kindness” where our children have developed an Act of Kindness Advent Calendar which reflects the values of kindness, gratitude, mindfulness and resilience.

We have 3 key targets in our initiatives

  1. Cyber World
  2. Resilience
  3. Holistic well-being

To this end we are engaged in the following to help achieve our aims

  • On Thursday March 14th 2019 we have booked Dr. Maureen Griffin to visit our school and speak with both our senior classes (3rd to 6th) and all parents in our wider community (not just current Shanbally NS parents). Dr. Griffin (BA,MA phi) is a forensic psychologist who specialises in the need for education/ training for children. Her company MGMS Training provides psychological services in the areas of online offending and safety. Her presentation on the night will focus on Social Media, Cyber Bullying, Internet Safety and Mobile Phone Safety. I will write to all parents early in the New Year regarding this outstanding and most relevant presentation, which we will strongly encourage everyone to attend.

7. Credit Union

Please note that the last pre-Christmas savings club will take place on Friday the 14th of December. Gary Hanrahan will resume the Credit Union Savings club on Friday January the 11th. Please note that new children/families who may wish to join up can still do so.

8. Parents Association

Our PA has forwarded their Christmas Newsletter. I would like to acknowledge and thank them for their huge fundraising efforts so far this year. They have to date raised a total of €2438.15. We especially appreciate, in advance, their plans for Thursday 20th December. Special mention to Tracy Crotty for her ongoing efforts with pre loved uniforms. A huge thank you to Ingrid and all the team for everything they do.

9. Reminder – Nut Free School

I would like to remind everyone that Shanbally NS is a nut free school and that our Allergies Policy is now in place and available to see on our website www.shanballyns.ie. At this time of the year treats are often sent in so we would like you to be mindful of this policy.

10. Guitar lessons 2019

Past pupil Caoimhe Barrett will begin guitar and/or Ukulele lessons from Tuesday January 08th. These classes are open to children from 2nd to 6th class. The cost of these lessons is €70 for 10 weeks, including a €20 deposit. Typical lessons are for 30 minutes, with a maximum of 5 students. We are sending notes home on behalf of Caoimhe. She may be contacted at 085-2835122 or caoimhesmusic@gmail.com for further information. Please note that the school owns about a dozen children’s acoustic guitars which were sourced through our PA a few years ago. These guitars are available, once a deposit of €30 is paid to the school, to allow families explore/determine whether children are going to maintain the lessons prior to committing to buying a guitar.

11. Homework Club

As outlined by Mrs Gorman/Miss O’Mahony today is the last day of homework club until we resume on Monday the 7th of January.

13. Expression of Gratitude

I would like to thank one of our families who made a significant financial contribution to the school recently for educational purposes. We appreciate this very kind gesture and will endeavour to spend the money wisely.

I would also like to thank parent Garry Murphy of Suite Cottages (carrigsigns.com / mobile 086-0443163 /gmurphy@carrigsigns.com) for his donation of beautiful maths signage and other resources, including signs for our Open Night.

14. Shamrock’s GAA Draw

We would also like to acknowledge Shamrock’s GAA for the continued use of their facilities and for supplying schools coach Anthony Shannon, who has been a big hit with 2nd to 4th Class. We are gladly advertising their Annual Christmas Draw consisting of 30 prizes, including some Christmas Hampers. The draw takes place on Wednesday the 19th of December at the Shamrock bar. Tickets are €2 each or a book of three for €5 and are available through the school office.

15. Christmas Mass in Shanbally

Fr Seán has asked me to remind everyone that the traditional Family Mass will take place in Shanbally Church on Christmas Eve at 5pm. Mass also takes place at 7pm on Christmas Eve.

16. Duplo

Should any family have any “Duplo” that they are no longer using it would be gratefully appreciated if you could donate it to the school. Thank you.

17. New Face in the Office

You may have noticed another friendly face in the school office in the last few days. Ruth has cut down her hours on a temporary basis for family commitments but we are delighted to welcome Caroline Murphy who will hold the fort in her absence. Typically Ruth will be here on Mondays and Thursdays, with Caroline here for the rest of the week. This may change in any given week. Both will liaise closely to ensure that all school matters are dealt with efficiently in the usual professional and discreet manner.

18. Appreciation and thanks

This term has been an exceptionally busy time and the weeks have flown by. Well done to all pupils who represented the school in sports, quizzes, credit union initiatives, etc. I would like to sincerely thank everyone in our school community; parents, PA, school staff, Board of Management, Fr. Sean and Fr Con and all members of our wider community who have contributed to school life in 2018. I would particularly like to acknowledge our wonderful students; it is a pleasure to work with you on a daily basis. We hope that you have a fantastic break and we wish you all a happy and a peaceful Christmas.
