Money Collections

  • The €60 Voluntary Family Contribution is now due. As costs at the beginning of the year are a burden to families and with Storm Ophelia in October 2017 we are only now requesting this €60 per familyvoluntary contribution. Thanks to those who have already paid. This money is used to pay the 24-hour Allianz Pupil Insurance (see below for more information) for all children in the school and also goes towards photocopying costs, paper & toner, school texting service, mandatory City Sports tickets and new App which we will outline below. It is also used to subsidise the significant cost of buses used during the year (outside of school tours). While the DES emphasise the voluntary aspect of this contribution we would respectfully request that any family in a position to pay would do so as we need it to subsidise ongoing shortfalls/ cutbacks in DES funding.
  • Gymnastics has commenced for all classes. Huge thanks to Colm and Chloe O’Toole of Gymnastics Inc., Kilnagleary Industrial Park, Crosshaven Road, Carrigaline, Co. Cork who are very generously providing these classes free of charge! (10 lessons for Juniors to 6th) as their son Charlie is in our Junior Infant class.
  • Irish Dancing (6 lessons for Juniors to 5th) commenced on Tuesday February 20th with Miah Walsh of the Kiely-Walsh Academy of Irish Dance. The children always really enjoy them. For Juniors to 5th the cost is €3 per child which will be funded from Parents Voluntary Contributions as requested above.
  • Swimming
    • Dates: 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th April
    • Costs for 3rd and 4th classes: We are awaiting bus costs for this and we will notify you as soon as we can finalise overall costs.
  • School Tours approximate costs per child:

Juniors/Seniors/ SSLD:   €18 approx.

1st/2nd:                                  €25 approx.

3rd/4th:                                  €25 approx.

5th:                                          €31 approx.

6th:                                          €TBC

Enrolments for 2019 +

Please contact the office to check if your children for 2019 and beyond are enrolled in the school. If not, please request an enrolment form from Ruth in the office as we are currently looking at our enrolments for the next few years. We would like to welcome Adam to Juniors and Leo to Seniors. We hope they are settling in and enjoy their school days in Shanbally NS.

Parents Association- Thanks

Since our last newsletter on November 30th, we would like to thank and acknowledge the PA for the following: Puppet Show on December 19th, pre-Christmas Santa visit, presentation to Ms. Sheahan, the recent fundraiser Clothing Collection and the Valentine Bake/Cake Sale. Upcoming events include a Zumba Master Class on Sunday April 29th. Pre-loved school uniforms and tracksuits are available in the Halla. Please feel free to take same for a small donation. Box in the Halla. A reminder that full school uniforms are worn on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (1st to 6th) and Monday, Tuesday for Juniors, Seniors + Language Class. School tracksuits on remaining days unless communicated otherwise.

As always we are indebted to our PA and our school body in general for their generous support of all events.

Parking/ Roadway/ footpaths

This continues to be stressful and potentially dangerous at drop-off and collection times. While we appreciate parents need to collect children safely from the school it is not acceptable to abandon cars in the car-park. I would urge people to use available spaces before parking alongside the middle spaces. Anyone not using a proper space should stay with their car to facilitate those wishing to enter/exit and those who need to access the Disability Parking spaces. On wet days it is understandable but not acceptable that people abandon cars to escort children in to school; parking on the opposite footpath across from the school blocks all other road users and forces children dangerously out on to the road to exit/access their own cars. Thank you to those who correctly use the car-park or choose to park up the road. We urge you to consider safety aspects at all times when parking in the vicinity of the school.

Trócaire collections

There are Trócaire collection boxes available in the classes if you wanted to send in loose change with your child. Trócaire is the overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland. Money raised during their Trócaire Box appeal is for their “Until Love conquers Fear” initiative. Monies raised goes to support their work in helping struggling communities in their fight for justice and dignity.

Thank you to our staff and Fr. Sean/ Fr. Con who continue to help in preparing the children for their Confirmation. Our recent Confirmation Enrolment Mass, February 7th, was a lovely ceremony and the children also enjoyed their Retreat Day in Scala, Blackrock last Tuesday, February 20th. I have been asked to devise a seating plan for the Confirmation day and this is currently being worked on. I will write home to all families in this regard. After Easter an envelope will be sent home in respect of a group photo taken on the day by Rose Gowan which will be available to purchase.

2nd class

Best of luck to our First Holy Communion children in 2nd class who make their First Penance on Tuesday March 8th at 7.30 pm. Sincere thanks to class teacher, Ms. Harrington, SNA Noreen Meehan, and the active First Holy Communion Committee for their hard work and commitment, not to mention Fr. Con and Fr. Sean! Please note that on the week of Monday April 16th we will be arranging for Sinead from Laura’s School Wear to come in to size the boys for Communion blazers. Parents will be invited to be present for the sizing if they’d like, once details are finalised.

Photographer Rose McGowan is now taking names for First Holy Communion photo sittings. Forms have gone home. Please contact the class teacher if you need another form. Thank you.

Homework Club: Please note that there will no homework club on Tuesday March 6th i.e. Tuesday week as all staff will be attending a Croke Park Hour workshop on Child Protection

Credit Union: Fiona Kearney, Business Development Officer, has asked us to let you know that tomorrow will be the last collection of money for a while as she is changing positions. We would ask that all children who hold a Credit Union account would bring in their book tomorrow, even if not lodging money, to receive any outstanding deposit slips. Once a new officer is appointed, Credit Union collections will continue.

Swimming Achievements: Marc Galland, 6th class, retained his National Title at 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly at the recent Irish Minor Schools Finals at the National Aquatic Centre. Marc is a supremely dedicated member of SWSC and to become a double champion for the second consecutive year is an outstanding feat. Well done Marc. We wish him the best in his future swimming career, which we will follow closely proudly.

Allianz Pupil Personal Accident Insurance: In Shanbally NS, all pupils are signed up for 24 hour, 365 day protection which covers children for medical and dental expenses which are incurred following an accident and which cannot be claimed from another source. See for details of policy benefits. Please note from September 2017 the following exclusions have been added to the policy; the company will not pay any benefits in respect of accidental bodily damage arising from an insured person taking part in

  1. Quadbike riding or racing
  2. Motorbike riding
  3. Snow boarding
  4. Boxing, mixed martial arts or any martial art involving combat with an opponent unless it is in connection with school activities.

Aladdin School App: Dear Parent/Guardian,

Our school is delighted to announce that we will shortly roll out the Aladdin Schools Connect to parents/guardians of children in our classes.

The school uses the Aladdin Schools software service for administrative purposes and Connect will give you secure access to messages from the school and to details of your child’s attendance, test results, reports cards etc. via secure login from your internet browser or Aladdin Connect App

Aladdin Connect is a fantastic way to enhance a school’s communication with parents. It enables parents to stay connected and informed about their child’s education by:
–              Ensuring that the school has their most up to date contact information
–              Keeping parents apprised of their child’s attendance
–              Keeping parents up to date on school and classroom news via noticeboard messages
–              Allowing parents view their child’s approved report card
–              Giving parents the option to opt in to share contact information with their child’s classmates’

parents via the Parent Privacy option for the class list.
Along with strengthening our home/school partnership, we also envisage Aladdin Connect helping the school by:
–              Helping to improve attendance by allowing parents to keep track of any school days their child

may have currently missed, along with late arrival and early leaving information.
–              Helping to reduce the amount of class/school notes being sent home
–              Helping the school/ teachers communicate with parents when the need arises
–              Reducing costs by eliminating the need to send school report cards by post
–              Reducing costs by reducing the number of text messages that need to be sent

You can rest reassured that Aladdin Schools uses state-of-the-art security to safeguard information entered by the school and data is stored and processed in strict compliance with Irish and European data protection laws.

In the next few days, you will receive a text/email message containing your registration link. There will be one link per parent which will allow the parent to access information for all their children in the school from one user account. Please do not forward this text/email or share this link as this is a unique registration code for each parent for your child/children in this school. During registration you will choose a password that will be used in conjunction with your email address to securely access the Aladdin Connect going forward. If you choose you may share your own contact details with other parents of children in the same class as your children, but please be reassured that this information will not be shared unless you choose to share it. Once you are registered you will be sent an email with links to download the Aladdin Connect App for your mobile device. The main advantage of using the App is to receive immediate alerts for app messages sent by your school. Downloading the App is highly recommended to enhance both the parent and school’s Connect experience.

By default both parents will have access to view their child’s contact information. If for any reason you do NOT wish to share your own personal contact information within the family circle or if you have any concerns regarding your particular family setup please contact the school in confidence to discuss or have this facility restricted.

In preparation for this please let the school know if your email address or phone number has changed recently.

We hope that you enjoy using Aladdin Connect. We welcome any feedback or questions you may have.

Kind Regards,

David Nolan
