CARA National Inclusion Award in Education Sector

On Thursday November 30th in Dublin, Shanbally NS was announced as the Cara National Award winner in the Education Sector. This award recognised those who enhance participation opportunities for people with disabilities in sport, physical activity and physical education. This category encompasses all levels of education, primary, secondary and third level. This award is the culmination of many years of commitment by staff to the promotion of a culture of inclusion and excellence in Shanbally NS. We are delighted for this recognition after many years of hard work in this area. It takes a long time to develop such a culture of inclusion and for it to become second nature to us all. This award is a tribute to the partnership between the children, staff, parents and wider community of Shanbally NS past and present. We are finalising plans for an in-school celebration on this Thursday so there will be no homework that night.

They also donated €500 from funds raised towards buses for the school over the year. We are so grateful to our hardworking PA and hope they enjoy a well-earned break over the Christmas Break.

Other highlights of the term were:

  • A visit from Water & Road Safety Development Officer, Caroline Casey, who spoke to classes about water safety, in particular.
  • A very successful Science Week with 6th Class mesmerising the other classes with their amazing experiments. A tremendous amount of hard work and preparation went in to this and it really paid off!
  • As part of Science Week some classes went to Carrigaline Library (3rd + 4th) for workshops and 6th class also benefited from an Electronic Brain Box workshop, sponsored by Cork Electronics Industry Association, which they really enjoyed.
  • As part of the Super Troopers/ Nutri Safari initiative, 4th class visited SuperValu Grange for an educational trip around nutrition and food.
  • We had a fantastic response to our Cork Penny Dinners Shoebox Appeal and we were overwhelmed by families’ generosity at such an expensive time, coming up to Christmas. The trouble people went to in wrapping the boxes and putting little cards with them has also to be acknowledged. It is truly wonderful to see such a spirit of giving.

Pupil Achievements

  • On Wednesday November 15th Shanbally NS completed a historic double with victories in the Allianz DF3 and DGF3 Sciath na Scol Finals. Sincere thanks to all in the school community who volunteer so much of their time in the promotion of Gaelic games, in particular staff members Paddy, Aideen and Sandra who give of their time every year to train the children. DVDs of the final are available to order through the school office. Please let us know if you’d like one. €20 for one (i.e. boys or girls) or €30 for a combined DVD (both) which is a brother + sister offer only.

Parents Contribution

It was our intention to request the traditional voluntary family contribution in October but given the proximity to Christmas and challenges brought about by Storm Ophelia, we will send home a request for this contribution in January. This will be especially necessary if the Department fail to pay the Minor Works Grant.

*As there will be no homework on Thursday 7th there will be no homework club on this day. This also applies Thursday 14th as our Nativity Play is on that evening. Therefore there is homework club this week Monday to Wednesday incl. and next week Monday to Wednesday incl. Homework club finishes this term on Wednesday December 13th.
