* Money Collections

  • Thanks to everyone who has paid any monies recently. School tour notes with associated costs should have been issued or will issue shortly. Thank you for paying these in a timely manner.

* Active Schools

Active Schools Programme: Our Active Schools Programme will run from June 6th to June 16th and will include a visit from the RNLI Lifeboat Educational Team, a Zumba workshop (PA Sponsored), a Taekwondo workshop, a Charity Walk (for Breakthrough Cancer Research), a School Mile as well as each class doing their own Active Schools initiative.

* 2nd class

Well done to our First Holy Communion children in 2nd class who made their First Communion recently. It is an important occasion for the children and particular thanks is due to all those who helped to make it such a special day. Huge thanks to class teacher, Mrs. Ryan, and the active First Holy Communion Committee for their hard work and commitment as well as the parents/Parents Association who helped out on the day by making/baking and serving.

* Staffing 2017-2018

The Department of Education & Skills (DES) allocation of teachers for the coming school year 2017/2018 has been published. Shanbally N.S. currently have nine mainstream class teachers. For September 2017 Shanbally N.S. have been allocated eight mainstream class teachers i.e. one class teacher less than at present. From next September there will be one class teacher for each of the class levels from Junior Infants to Sixth Class covering the eight different curriculums as set out by the Department of Education. Therefore we will be combining our 2 Fourth classes into 1 Fifth class from September 2017. The parents of children in Fourth class have been informed.

An unfortunate result of this allocation is that we lose a tremendous asset in the school, Mr. Aidan O’Mahony. Aidan has been with us for the last two years and has contributed hugely to special education in the school as well as his invaluable contribution to sporting activities, especially our Active Schools Campaign. Aidan is very popular with all in the school community and we wish him every success as he takes up a new position in Crosshaven Boys School.

* Cork City Sports

On tomorrow June 1st many of our students will represent our school in the traditional Cork City Sports which takes place in CIT grounds. We are especially grateful to parent Richard Murphy and teachers, Mr. Clifford and Ms. Callanan for their huge commitment in helping the children to prepare for these sports. The teachers have supplied very detailed information to all our runners in recent days, however, if anyone has lost these details or needs to check anything please contact me this evening/tonight on 087-7612694. Best wishes and good luck to all our athletes tomorrow. We are very proud of you.

* Uniform and Book Lists

At our recent staff meeting, we have decided that from next Tuesday, June 5th, all our pupils may wear the school tracksuit/school shorts/polo shirt if they wish. All homework will officially cease by Friday 9th. As communicated by Ms. Moran/Ms. O’Mahony their homework club for the year finishes this week. From Monday, June 26th to Thursday June 29th pupils are free to wear their own clothes. The rationale behind this is that 1. We will respectfully look for €2 per family as an extended non-uniform “day”, all monies collected will go towards past-pupil Mia McCormick for her involvement with the Moving Mountains charity and 2. Our PA are planning to organise a pre-loved school uniform sale over those few days (more details to follow from them).

On the morning of Friday June 23rd High Street Books and Buckley’s Schoolwear/Laura’s Boutique will be present in school with books and uniforms for sale.

* Acknowledgements

We would like to thank the dental team from Kevin O’Brien’s Winning Smile Dental Practice who came to the school recently and instructed the children on dental hygiene and correct tooth-brushing techniques.  It was very informative and helpful.

* Breakthrough Cancer Research Charity Walk

On Friday June 9th, tying in with our Active Schools Programme, Junior Infants to 5th class will take part in a fundraising charity work for Breakthrough Cancer Research. Recently, Kesh and Jill (from the group) visited us and spoke to the children on the work they do and the importance of fundraising contributions from the community, especially schools. It is our intention that we will walk from Shanbally to Ringaskiddy via the main road. Each class group will be supervised by their class teacher and other staff. We plan for the Juniors to head off first, followed by the other classes at intervals. Once we reach the Ringaskiddy playground we will let the children have their lunch and relax. We ask parents of Junior and Senior Infants to collect their children from Ringaskiddy playground at 1.30pm sharp instead of at the school. The remaining classes will walk back to school and go home at 2.30pm as usual.

Our PA has kindly offered any assistance we need to supervise crossing along the way, especially at roundabouts, and anywhere else needed. Of course we would love to have parents along to walk with us on the day but please note that children will be within their class groups and under the direct supervision of school staff.

Next week a permission slip (to allow children to take part) will be sent home as well as a more detailed outline of the walk. Having already donated to our pedal-power event this year and other community fundraisers we will not be giving sponsorship cards out. Instead Breakthrough Cancer Research has kindly supplied each class room with a collection jar and children can bring in loose change/ donations if they like.

Kesh and Jill will return to the school in a few weeks’ time for the official handover of any funds raised. This is a very worthwhile charity to support and while it is an expensive time of the year we would be delighted if families could support this in any way possible.

* Other News

Jack White in 2nd class has been selected Irish Soccer Team Mascot for their international in the Aviva Stadium on June 11th in their world-cup 2018 qualifier against Austria. Good luck Jack. We’ll all be watching for you.
